#Barranco is a seaside neighborhood south of the city center. Its Lima´s bohemian quarter and a social magnet on the weekend.. It started as a summer retreat for Lima's wealthy families, who built many of the ornate houses around the ravine that gives the suburb its name. But since 1874 its also been an artists enclave.. The main plaza is fronted by restaurants, cafes and bistros, leading to a string of nightclubs and peñas, or dance clubs. Taking the path down to the beach, you descend a broad alleyway to the Bridge of Sighs. The story goes that the daughter of a wealthy family fell in love with a street sweeper, but the relationship was forbidden and her sighs could be heard from the bridge. Its a spot where generations of young lovers have stolen their first kiss. A gas-lit promenade leads to the Pacific Ocean. Its lined with restaurants, venders selling anticuchos, beef hearts on skewers, and sweet, syrup covered Picarones, Peru's answer to the donut. Wandering musicians play guitars and cajons, and sing sad romantic criollo music to diners as they watch the breakers from the Pacific roll in to the shore.
